The road to hell is paved with good intentions.
Young police detective Roman Skulte starts working in the Riga Precinct in the mid-90s. He is full of juice, ready to take on crime, but he soon confronts a harsh truth: to fight crime, he must break the rules. Will he sacrifice integrity for justice?
The film was shot over a two-and-a-half-year period, from 2022 to 2025. It was filmed entirely in Riga, using various interior and exterior locations that still retain a Soviet-era atmosphere, as the story is set in 1995. The police station scenes were filmed and the whole set built in a former rubber factory and parts of the old KGB building. Some of the locations underwent renovation shortly after filming, allowing us to capture and preserve elements of historic environments that no longer exist today.
DIRECTOR OSCAR RUPENHEIT’S STATEMENT
I am tapping into the themes important to me personally. So, trying to look within myself and acknowledging corruption and hypocrisy between my heart, my mind, how I project myself within society, and all the mess coming out of it is in some way mirrored in this movie of ours. Although the theme of the movie is quite dark, in my style, I can't escape the irony and humor I see in life. Visually, I try to create something appealing to the eye. And why this story – I guess I am trying to satisfy my interest in the field of the innerworkings of the human mind and soul!
PRODUCER SINTIJA ANDERSONE’S STATEMENT
First and foremost, itʼs the story and setting that stand out – a unique and turbulent period in Latvian history, the "Wild West" of the Eastern flank, unfolding in the midst of a regime change. Through the skillful and stylistic vision of Oskars Rupenheits, along with his trusted creative team – cinematographer Juris Pīlēns, production designer Toms Jansons, and costume designer Ance Beinaroviča – the new production RED CODE BLUE is bound to hook the viewer with its dark humour, suspense, and distinctive style.
